The Essential Guide To Renault Trafic/Master, Vauxhall Vivaro/Movano, & Nissan Primstar Gearbox Issues
As an owner of the Renault Trafic/Master, the Vauxhall Vivaro/Movano, or the Nissan Primstar you may at some point experience transmission issues related to the PK6 PF6 gearbox. This particular gearbox is actually the second most common transmission we deal with at Eco-Torque Gearbox Services and we are currently repairing on behalf of three different Vauxhall main dealerships. If you have experienced an issue with this particular gearbox, then this guide is for you.
Common Issues With the PK6 PF6 Gearbox
The most common problem we have seen with this transmission is bearing wear which leads to a complete failure of the gearbox. Fortunately, this problem gives off early warning signs in the form of a slight humming noise when the vehicle is travelling over 40mph. It can also sometimes make a distinctive whine when the 6th gear is selected. This issue can be dealt with if caught early enough, so it is important not to delay if either of those signals occur. The resulting damage caused by not dealing with the issue can result in very costly repair or replacement bills or even needing a replacement vehicle.
Unfortunately, since this design has been around since the early 2000’s most cases of persistent bearing wear results in the vehicle being scrapped due to the value of the repairs against the vans retail value.
The bearing rollers on this gearbox have been worn down so much so that the retainer cage cannot support them anymore and causes the bearings to drop out of position. This particular vehicle would have made a constant whining noise whilst moving.
Resolving Bearing Issues On PK6 PF6 Gearbox

Prolonging the repair increases the wear and tear on the gearbox and over time will destroy the output shafts and differential gear. The damage can increase the contamination of the gearbox oil and dirty it. We would always recommend changing the gearbox oil every time you have a major service anyway – the low cost service can dramatically increase the lifespan of your transmission.
Other Issues With Renault, Vauxhall, & Nissan Gearboxes
Another very common issue we experience is the vehicle struggling to select 2nd gear, 3rd gear, and 4th gear. Some drivers may experience difficulty selecting these gears, or be unable to select them at all. If the latter happens then the 3rd and 4th gear must be replaced at the same time as they are only sold as a single unit by the manufacturers.
Gearbox Issues On Newer Vauxhall, Renault, & Nissan Vans
The newer version of the vans mentioned previously have the same gearbox as the old ones. However, on the Vauxhall Vivaro B/Movano, Renault Traffic Mk2/Master, and Nissan models the problems with the gearbox are occurring on much less mileage. Some Vauxhalls have been brought in with as little as 22k miles on the clock and are needing full bearing replacements and replacement gears. Previously the vans coming in were on between 60k to 120k miles.
